What happens in a private child autism assessment?
My approach follows the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) guidelines for assessing and diagnosing autism in children.
1) Phone consultation
A free 20 minute phone consultation and screening questionnaires to gather information about the difficulties your child is experiencing. This helps determine whether a full autism assessment would be most helpful.
2) Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule (ADOS-2)
The ADOS-2 is an observational assessment that involves a range of structured and conversational tasks designed to explore social communication, imagination, and emotional understanding.
This typically lasts around one hour and takes place in one of my offices, your home or online depending on your needs.
3) Developmental history
A detailed developmental history is gathered over the phone with a parent or caregiver who has known your child since early childhood. This typically lasts 2 hours. School are also sent questionnaires to get their perspective on your child.
4) MDT meeting
Following the assessment, I meet with a multidisciplinary team (MDT). Information gathered from the ADOS-2 and developmental history is reviewed, and a joint clinical decision is made regarding whether the diagnostic criteria for autism are met.
5) Diagnostic Report
I will write up the assessment in a report, which will then be emailed to you within 4 weeks from the assessment date.
6) Feedback Consultation
Parents or carers may choose an optional 50 minute consultation to discuss the report and recommendations.
