What happens in a private child ADHD assessment?
My approach follows the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) guidelines for assessing and diagnosing ADHD in children.
1) Phone consultation
A free 20 minute phone consultation with parents or carers to gather information about concerns, development and current difficulties.
2) ADHD screening tools
ADHD screening questionnaires are sent to gather further information, helping to identify whether a child or young person is likely to be experiencing signs and symptoms consistent with ADHD.
3) ADHD assessment (DIVA-5)
An ADHD assessment is undertaken with you and your child using an assessment called the Diagnostic Interview Schedule (DIVA-5 YP). A full developmental, medical and social history is also taken with you. The assessment typically lasts around 2 hours.
4) Diagnostic Report
A detailed written report within 4 weeks of the assessment.
5) Feedback Consultation
Parents or carers may choose an optional 50 minute consultation to discuss the report and recommendations.
6) Medication
If medication is considered appropriate, a referral to a Psychiatrist to assess and prescribe ADHD medication can be made.
